One Night in Paris

Saturday 18th June 2022

On the move again - this time it is a delayed holiday with a pal to the Auvergne region of France which was originally planned for June 2020 - but "something" happened to prevent that!

We decided to fly to Paris, spend a night there and then head south on the train on the Sunday.

Arriving in Paris we found the RER line which normally runs to Paris Gare du Lyon had engineering works and so we were put on a replacement bus service to a nearby station to complete the journey by train. I did like "I replace the train"!

Arriving at Gare de Lyon it was a short walk to our hotel in Rue Parrot. This was fortunate as the temperature was in the high 30s - a heatwave had descended on France and the heat was stifling.

Unfortunately the lift was out of order and we were on the 7th Floor - that was an interesting climb with the luggage!

We soon headed out for a wander around our neighbourhood (12th Arrondissement) and found a wine bar which also offered tapas. The waiter suggested a wine which was a melange of 80% Viognier and 20% Syrah - and was served chilled - very acceptable on such a warm evening! An assiette of charcuteries plus bread and cornichons also arrived.

After that it was a short walk to a local Bistrot for dinner at the end of which the humidity and heat were oppressive - thank goodness for air conditioning in the hotel!

I then discovered I had left my glasses.... somewhere. It was too late by this time to go back to the bistrot and I couldn't face the climb up 7 flights of stairs again!

In the morning I was thankfully reunited with them again (I really can't see my phone without them!) and we had a wander round the market in Place de la Bastille and the surrounding area - managing to catch glimpses of the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame.

Now on the train to Clermont-Ferrand and will continue there tomorrow.
